FCC adds Kaspersky to Covered List due to unacceptable risks to securitySecurity Affairs

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has added Kaspersky to that list because it poses an unacceptable risk to US national security.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulates several Kaspersky products and services. target list “It poses an unacceptable risk to the national security of the United States,” he said.

“The Federal Communications Commission’s Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau today announced that equipment and services from three companies: AO Kaspersky Lab, China Telecom (Americas) Corp, and China Mobile International USA Inc. added to the list of telecommunication equipment and services. Consistent with the requirements of the Security and Reliable Telecommunications Networks Act of 2019, it is considered a threat to national security,” reads FCC press release.

This list, issued by the Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau, includes products and services that may pose an unacceptable risk to the national security of the United States or to the security and safety of Americans.

The US Commission also added China Mobile International USA and China Telecom Americas to the list, which are China’s state-owned mobile service providers. The following is a list of Eligible Equipment or Services added on March 25, 2022.

  • information security products, solutions and services provided directly or indirectly by AO Kaspersky Lab or its predecessors, successors, parent companies, subsidiaries or affiliates.
  • International telecommunication service provided by China Mobile International USA Inc. Subject to Section 214 of the Communications Act of 1934.
  • communication service provided by China Telecom (Americas) Corp. Subject to Section 214 of the Communications Act of 1934.

The FCC has banned Kaspersky security solutions and services provided by Kaspersky or its affiliated companies.

“The FCC’s decision to add these three agencies to our target list is good news. The FCC plays an important role in protecting the country’s telecommunications networks, and keeping that list up to date is an important tool by which we can do this. In particular, I am pleased that the National Security Agency has agreed with my assessment that China Mobile and China Telecom appear to meet the necessary thresholds for adding these companies to the list. Their addition and Kaspersky Labs will help protect our network from threats from Chinese and Russian state-backed groups who want to engage in espionage or harm American interests.” FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr said. “I applaud President Rosenworcel for working closely with partners in the administration on this update. As we continue to work to protect America’s telecommunications networks, I am sure we will add more companies to our coverage list.”

In mid-March, the German Federal Information Security Agency (BSI) recommended that consumers uninstall Kaspersky Anti-Virus software. The agency warns that cybersecurity companies could be involved in hacking attacks during the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In accordance with §7 BSI Act, BSI warns against the use of Kaspersky Antivirus and recommends switching to a defense solution from another vendor as soon as possible.
