Facebook is vile, but banning it in Russia is wrong • Graham Cluley

I am not a fan of Facebook.

Hatred, misinformation, abuse, fraud, and more can be found in the most evil nooks (and, sadly, there are many evil nooks). The list goes on. It is a breeding ground for crackpots, conspiracy theories, and cybercrime.

I deleted my Facebook account a few years ago. In fact, it was inconvenient to participate in a platform with users most of whom did not know how their personal information was being abused.

So, should I welcome the news? Russia blocks Facebook access?

I do not think so.

because facebook is often terrible ~ can It can help people stay in touch with relatives and friends and serve as a source of news. Very useful if you live in a country with state-controlled media censoring information about one of the most terrifying conflicts in Europe since World War II. II.

Yes, having access to Facebook will open you up to QAnon theories, anti-Vax propaganda, and a myriad of cramped echo chambers that ordinary Russians are crazy about. But it will also give them a chance to find independent reports of Russia’s horrific invasion of Ukraine.

And on facebook Nick Clegg, president of Meta’s global affairs, pointed out that the ban on the site would remove the way the Russian public could organize protests and express their distaste for the government’s actions (which could be seen as very risky behaviour). ).

So should I quit Facebook? Yes, you probably should. evil

Should Russia ban Facebook? no.
